This may sound insane, but I want to extract the C&C mapping graphics for use in a different project. I.e. not to make maps for C&C, but to make maps for another totally different program.
Does anybody know of a way to do this? I can't seem to find a program that will extract the graphics as images - at least, I can't find one that actually works. Mix Manager just will not run on my computer, and XCC won't extract backgrounds, just objects.

XCC can convert them (http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/junk/tutorials/xcc_copy-as.png), but only as single cells. They're annoying to puzzle back together.
The map graphics are in the theater mixfiles (temperat/winter/desert).
The old RAMIX pack has an application to convert them where ytou can set the dimensions though.
Of course, you can also just open XCC Editor, which is a C&C1 map editor included in the XCC pack, and make screenshots of all the tiles it has.

for extracting as an image (sort of)
download XCC utilites set, then (once installed) extract the wanted maps with the xcc Mixer. (every maps has a .bin file and a .ini file)
put the 2 files in the same place as each other, run the program called Editor, open map go to file then save as image.

dude, read what he said. He wants to extract the terrain graphics. He DOESN'T want to make or edit maps.

Read on. "to make maps for another totally different program". That means he needs the separate tiles.

Where would I find this RAMIX? It's not in the files here.
Also, for some strange reason, XCC editor won't open on my machine. It keeps saying "Unable to open all MIX files, please insert a C&C CD." - but the CD is already inserted (virtually - it's a mounted ISO) and the game itself can happily see it.

You have to set the game folders in XCC Mixer (View -> Directories); XCC Editor uses that data. If you install C&C95 v1.06b (http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/cnc95upd/cc95p106/) you got all necessary files right there in the game folder and won't need a CD.
RAMIX is in the tools folder in my open directory site (nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com), in the old tools section:
http://nyerguds.arsaneus-design.com/tools/old/
The tool in it to convert terrain is TMP2PCX.EXE. It's a DOS tool though; you'll need to use the command prompt to use it.

Well, I did set the directories, but now Editor crashes on open with Data Load Error.
This program just doesn't seem to like me...
Make sure you have the latest version (http://xhp.xwis.net/utilities/XCC_Utilities.exe).
And if you use Vista/7 try to run XCC Mixer as administrator.

I have the latest version, and I'm running it on XP in an Admin-level account.
Is it, maybe, something in Alcohol's virtual drive that XCC doesn't like?

Well, if you configure your TD folder to a C&C95 v1.06b folder, then it should find all the necessary files and never need a CD.
(oh, crap, I forgot, TD 1.06b contains a serious error... hotfix is here (http://www.commandandpatch.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=44))
