Well there's a whole modification here that in my opinion has the best maps and has better gameplay than Renegade.

I'm not a huge fan of the APB maps TBH, they're too big for my liking.

They're not all big. Some are actually based off original Renegade levels (Metro and Bunkers). I agree that A Path Beyond is miles too big for a game, but most are mid-sized and work perfectly.

Deathmatch maps like Fissure aren't big at all.

I haven't really found the largeness in any of the maps to be a problem for me. All the maps are being remade anyway, and I still like them a lot.

Exactly, the official ones are fine. But when you start off as a basic grunt and you have to run everywhere it takes months to get to the enemy base!

At a maximum, it takes about 50-60 seconds to reach the enemy base on most maps. APB is an exception due to it's sheer size. Chances are you'll meet an enemy before this if you're trying to rush them and have a firefight. On all maps, after two minutes you'll be able to buy a vehicle of some sort either from an ore truck returning to the refinery or from the silo giving you money. If you're rushing on your own on foot, then it's pretty much a waste of time as you really need to work as a team to get anywhere. I can't believe you don't like Keep off the Grass or The Woods Today, both are fantastic fun to play and are pretty well-balanced as well as being medium-sized so it isn't all running like you say.
